A Japanese martial art of the body, rooted in the classical weapon arts.

The Art

Toushinkai Taijutsu descends from the classical Japanese weapon arts — the sword, the spear, the staff — and applies their principles to the unarmed body. It works on an opponent through the logic of Tenchi-Inyou — heaven and earth, yin and yang — rather than through force. Everything from the fundamentals to advanced application is taught with real encounter in mind.

Practice is not a contest of strength or size. It is the study of principle and the tempering of the body. Those who wish to build a martial body, those who want practical self-defence, and those who simply want to put their body in order are all welcome. Age, sex and experience are not barriers.

The Teacher

Kazuhisa Miyakawa, Shihan

After more than a decade in combat sports, Kazuhisa Miyakawa received the licence of Shihan in the martial arts organisation Aunkai. He remained there twenty years before founding Toushinkai Taijutsu in 2024. He also heads Tokyo Bodyguard & Detective, and has been responsible for VIP protection in Japan and abroad.

For many years he has travelled through Europe and Asia holding seminars, teaching martial arts and self-defence to a wide range of people, among them soldiers, police officers, security professionals and professional fighters. His work now extends beyond Japan to the growth of Toushinkai Taijutsu branches overseas.

Training from Abroad

You do not need to be in Japan to begin.

Online Members take part in four online sessions each month, conducted in both Japanese and English. Sessions begin at Sunday 00:00 JST (Saturday midnight, Japan time). There is no requirement to wear training uniform, and no set place to be. What you need is a space to move in and the willingness to return each week.

Online Members who wish to train together may form a study group. A study group practises on its own, under a registered administrator, and uses the name “Toushinkai Taijutsu Study Group” followed by the name of its place. It is how the art has taken root in more than one country.

Rank, Certification and Branches

Rank in Toushinkai Taijutsu is not bought and not given for attendance. For the first three years a member holds the rank of Shoden. Beyond that, advancement rests on the judgement of the Association: Chuden, Naiden, Okuden, Kaiden.

Online training carries you to Chuden. To go further, you must be seen and corrected in person — either by coming to Japan, or by receiving a teacher designated by the Association. This is not a formality. An art of contact cannot be transmitted through a screen alone.

From Naiden, a member may apply for certification as an Instructor; from Kaiden, as a Senior Instructor. Certification is granted by the Association following a technical examination, and it is renewed each year through direct instruction. Where a certified Instructor is enrolled, a branch exists — the number of members is immaterial. A branch carries the name and the logo, sets the fees of its own members, and receives a teacher from Japan once a year.

A study group that produces a certified Instructor becomes a branch. That path is open from the first online session.
